Well, Well

There is a Sametime server variable that defines the allowed Client versions. 8.5 has a new client version number and so by default it is disallowed in the Sametime configuration. Yes, I think this is a stupid setting but every Sametime admin should be aware of it (assuming that this is your issue). And to be honest if it would be that easy, everyone could do it.
For the OOO. If you run a 8.5 server OOO will work as you would expect it to work. IBM has decided to develop a server task to make it happen so you will need to run against a 8.5 server (older server versions just don't have the required code). I can't say much about overall performance. For me it is still too slow but for IBM and many others it works well. I have to accept that.
